Where to start with tufting?

From the idea to the first creation, the shortest path to avoid beginner mistakes.

You discovered tufting on Instagram or TikTok, fell in love with those velvety rugs in bright colours, and now you're wondering how to get started?

I've been there. Here’s the path I wish I had from the beginning.

Choose your first pattern

Start simple, really simple. A geometric pattern, a basic shape, contrasting colours. Avoid gradients and small details for your first piece.

💡 Ideal for beginners: a pattern with a maximum of two colours, in a 30x30 cm format.

Prepare your materials

Before you start, make sure you have everything you need: gun, frame, canvas, thread and finishing tools.

Calculate your thread quantities

Nothing is more frustrating than running out of thread in the middle of a project! Before buying, calculate exactly what you need.

🎨 Use Yarnator for free → Import your image and automatically get the quantities by colour.

Tuf your first piece

Stretch your canvas, transfer your pattern and get started! A few tips to get off to a good start:

  • Hold the gun perpendicular to the canvas
  • Move at a steady speed
  • Start with the outlines and then fill in
  • Don't worry about the imperfections, they disappear with shearing!

Finish your piece

This is the step that makes all the difference! Once the tufting is finished:

  • Shear the surface to even out the threads
  • Glue the back to solidify the piece
  • Add a finishing fabric for a clean back

The classic mistakes to avoid

❌ Choosing a pattern that is too complex to start Fine details and gradients are very difficult to achieve in tufting. Save them for later!

❌ Not stretching the canvas enough A poorly stretched canvas gives an uneven result and complicates the work of the gun.

❌ Getting discouraged at the first imperfection Your first rug won't be perfect. Mine wasn't either. And that's exactly how it works! 😊
